Bit of an update, I've been in touch with Efergy and they tell me they hope to have just such a product in the near future possibly within a few weeks.
I understand it will be similar to their E2 model but able to report on PV export. It's ready built, uses clip on CTs and is fairly simple to set up. Stores data locally with its own web server but can export data to the Open Energy Monitor server or a lcoal versionPVOutput.
It's a bit expensive, but much more useful than the commonly available simple versions while still being fairly easy to install. Thanks for that. Looks interesting but, as you say, may be a little OTT for my purpose. Must be about 15 to 20 years ago that we borrowed a smart meter from the local library.
We plugged it into each socket around the house and it told us how much energy that appliance was using. We have never felt the need to repeat that exercise! I am sure there must be a market for an updated version of the above? All the expense and labour involved in rolling out the current system could be better spent on doing it.

It's a good practice run for everyone, helping us figure out what we can combine and find any issues. I wanted a way to monitor usage without having to go out and look at the load meter so I ordered an IoTaWatt. It gives me WiFi monitoring so I can walk around the house and try different combinations.
I like it.
It is an open platform and capable of doing a lot more than what I'm doing with it. A few pictures of the IotaWatt unit, main status display, and a graph of total power usage. We were pushing limits, had the dryer and water heater going at the same time. You can see where they pulled Once I got the graph set up I used Chromecast to put live updates on the big screen so everyone could see what was happening as we cycled between activities.

It works standalone or integrated with other open-source web server software like Emoncms 47 from the good people at openenergymonitor. The graphs I posted are using the integrated capabilities that come with the IotaWatt. Not as fancy as the dashboard stuff, but easy access to the stuff most of us care about. There are no plans to discontinue the emonTx. Both the IoTaWatt and emonTx have advantages in key areas which complement each other. The onboard SD card allows data to be saved locally with high resolution and network resilience. If the IoTaWatt is posting to an Emoncms server and loses network connectivity data logged to the SD card will be bulk uploaded to Emoncms when a network connection is restored.

However, Emoncms offers an in-built transport layer encryption solution where the emoncms apikey is used as the pre-shared key for encrypting the data with AESCBC. The config utility will cause your browser to download and display the most recent characters in the log. With the exception of the first messages after startup, all of the messages in the log will have a date and time stamp. Messages issued by one of the IoTaWatt Services will begin with the name of the service followed by a colon, as in this message issued from the datalog Service indicating it has successfully started. While it would be impossible to maintain a list of all of the possible messages, the messages issued at startup are pretty straightforward and provide a lot of information.
